Default 7D vs Mark IV resolution/noise

Similar to Arash's thread regarding a comparison of both cameras, it would be great if someone could take the time to compare the two cameras in a focal-length-limited scenario, meaning that images are taken with both cameras from a set distance. Then crop them so the subject is framed identically. (The Mark IV would require a heavier crop due to the 1.3x sensor.)

I did a similar comparison between the 7D and Mark III:

Thanks to anyone who might be able to give this a try.

I think that guy whos name begins with J juce or Juts or something has done this - he really knows his stuff and gets hold of all the gear and does great tests
Sorry i dont know his name hopefully someone will.

Yes, I know about Peter's test but I would like to see something like a bird framed identically at 300-400 ppi. (This wouldn't be too difficult to do at a bird feeding station.)

    Thanks,

Alan the link did not open for me?

If I get a chance will try, makes sense the comparison. So far I am seeing better images coming out of the MK4, particularly regarding noise but that would be expected due to the larger sensor. .... but quality wise have been happy with the 7D and is getting lots of use.

The Juza test is a good one, but the images are not framed identically as you would if you were preparing an image for publication, Internet or print.

For focal-length-limited scenarios, the only true way to test the cameras is by framing the images identically.

I know what I'm asking is a lot, but this is the only true way of testing the resolution/noise of these two cameras when photographing subjects from a set distance.

    Cheers,

    Alan

    Hi Alfred,

The link is working...at least from my desk. You might want to try again.

I know this is a bit of a pain to do, but it would help me (and others) decide on the Mark IV. I've been on the fence trying to decide. Of course, image quality/resolution is just one aspect, but I am curious as to how these two perform side-by-side when photographing birds.

    Thank you,

    Alan

    Hi Alfred,

Huh. I wonder why it wouldn't work for you at work. Maybe a spam blocker?

Anyway, I did another test this afternoon with a cooperative chickadee that was no more than 20 feet from me. This required very little cropping for both the 7D and Mark III. Interestingly, they both came out looking about the same regarding noise and resolution. The only way to tell them apart was at 100% zoom and even then they were really close.

I think that resolution begins to play a greater role in image quality when the image is cropped more than 50% of the original image. At 300 ppi with very little cropping, the Mark III's image did not suffer as much from pixel interpolation. A heavier crop would probably have causes the Mark III's image to suffer to a greater extent due to the lower pixel count.

I'm sure the Mark IV will trump the 7D regarding noise at all ISOs, but the resolution should be slightly less. Adjusting the 7D's image with a bit of noise reduction should make the final images look almost identical both in resolution and noise. (That's just an educated guess however.)

Were you able to do the comparison Alfred?

    Thanks,

    Alan
