Took out the trusty 100-400 the other day at my folks' cottage. It was like the good 'ol days pre-500! Still delivering quality images like the old workhorse it used to be. Photographing a photogenic bird like the Common Loon certainly helps with that!

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/500s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld from a paddle boat, image rotation then cropped corners off, a few blemishes in the water cloned/patched/spot removal tooled out. Blacks on the body part darkened via burn tool, NR to all except the subject.

I'm always amazed at how close you manage to get to your subjects. And this time, I can't even use the "he has that 500mm" excuse.

Love the colors on the neck, the green of the water and the water drops on the head.

Lovely low angle shot, Daniel! Perfect exposure as usual! The subject really stands out against the dark green BG. Excellent the POV, exposure, pose and processing!

Classy! In the world of bird photography, that lens is well associated with your work (in my little world anyway)...when you retire you should donate it to the Smithsonian :) This is a beautiful loon image...really showcases the throat markings and colors...I dig that wet glossy bill too.

Beautiful. Great POV, detail and BG. Love how the iridescence really shows on his neck.

Hi Dan, love the 'alert' pose, and with the extended neck, we can see the different colours so well - yep, you nailed the overall exposure. Comp works well, just enough space all round.

When you mentioned taking out your 'trusty' 100-400, I feel ashamed with myself, as since getting my 300 F/2.8 last november, I havent touched my 100-400. I always say to myself that I must take it out, but never do. It served me well, but wont sell it. :w3

Great Loon image. The old lens still shines in the hands of the talented owner.

Oh, and I though this subject was Randy's bag, gorgeous Daniel, nice control of the whites and excellent detail. Do you think a sliver off the top?
Interesting about what you & Stu said about the lens, I hardly used mine, it just gather dust and then I eventually gave it away, shows what a nice bit of kit it is, in the right hands.
