Major Mitchell's Cockatoo photographed at a stock watering trough on Kilcowera Station, western Queensland. These uncommon birds occur in dry area across inland southern Australia.

Canon 7D, EF500 f/4, tripod, kwik-camo, ISO 400, f/9, 1/2000, vertical crop from horizontal image, a tiny bit of canvas added at top.

Beautiful image Simon! Great pose, and excellent techs. If anything maybe a tiny bit more room top and bottom.

Thanks for your comments Ofer, here's a less tight version.

Looks much better! Here is another idea - I feel the diagonal formed in here makes a stronger composition. This is of course - totally personal. Hope you don't mind the re-post. ;)

Edit: just realised that the repost is uploaded very small which makes it looks much softer than the original - I had to add some sharpening but the IQ is significantly lower than the original. I wonder whether this can be changed in this new system.

fantastic image. I love this species. I like Ofer's composition the best. Mostly because I am a 2:3 fanatic ;) And his comes the closest to it.

Hopefully I can get something similar good during my stay in Australia :)

I like the wider crop, cool-looking bird, eye contact, pose and raised crest make this one for me. I might lighten the shadow of the perch on the tail.

Love the raised crest and colours of the cockatoo. I think compositionally Ofers repost works the best. Congrats on a fine shot!

Hi Simon,
I like Ofer's crop, but you have done a great job with the details - I just love that raised crest and the eye contact!
