Photoshop Cropping Problems

When i import a TIFF file to Photoshop. I am having problems when I use content aware for adding canvas, it shows up in layer 0,even though I hit control J for a new layer 1, and when done with all of my post processing, the content aware white space shows up on layer 0 but not the layer I actually did the crop on.It also shows up in my final file as a white space.
I've never had this happened before, did i inadvertently hit a button I wasn't supposed to?

Not sure if this is your problem but sometimes i will have that happen when the selection layer is active . i have never had an issue when the background layer is active.
