That would be a Muscovy Duck. It occurs in the wild as far north as the Rio Grande and is more widespread as a domestic bird (the only domestic duck not derived from Mallard) and escapee. So if your new location was south of the border it might have been wild......
Thanks Delkan
That is what I thought. and since I am in New England it must be an escapee
Myer- Your Muscovy looks like the wild-type in terms of plumage colouration. I am not sure if there are any feral populations in New England but this could be a wild bird.
This is not a wild bird. Wild-type Muscovies do not have that much white in the head.
...... and they also don't have bills like this one as far as I understand. I was not suggesting that this was a vagrant, pure, wild Muscovy from Mexico and points south. Sorry Myer if I gave this impression. The plumage of this bird is much more like wild-type than your average domestic Muscovy, which has a lot more white in the head, and usually elsewhere, than this bird. That's really all I was getting at. Domesticated muscovies have become feral (i.e., wild) in many places and I would still be interested to know if any are living wild in southern New England, where I understand this image was made.
