Late December in Germany / Europe

It seems that I'll always be coming to Germany/Europe at the wrong times for bird photography - June/July last year - and now the last 10 days of December. At least, I have sufficient time to travel somewhere outside of Germany if necessary. Where would you go that time of the year?

I am not particularly picky as for the bird species but of course a place with abundant birds, some variety and the opportunity to get close is important.
