Nice bird and pose.. but the BG is too strong on this one..If I have to crop this one I will crop more from top and left so that my eyes remain on bird..but that's just how I would have liked it.

Richard I think the processing is a little awry. The image looks very saturated and super contrasted, there is also a sharpening halo around the original (around the bird perch and the copyright sign) but not the repost which looks very much softer. I don't intend to sound too critical - just hope this helps?

    Hi Jonathan

    thats OK

I had been trying out USM very strong 25/200/0 and should have not done so
on the repost went back to prior.
Went back to original CR2 and reprocessed as here. NR to BG ans light sharpening only, rest as OOC
I appreciate your input; essentially what this forum is about, as this is the only way to "eventually" get things working right
    takes time and patience

So much better! I would perhaps try a touch of Noise Reduction I now use Topaz - you can download the freebie before purchase I think it is great.

Actualy I purchased Topaz NR a while back and did use it here on the BG, Presume you mean a light pass on the bird, My 40D is a real ***** when at 800 but with forest birds like this, its the only way to get anything like the SS with the TC on,
thanks once again for your critique

I likes the last version. All issues gone with latest changes except Noise as suggested by Jonathan.

Richard - yes I would use on the bird also - just try the different settings so that you can apply the minimum to achieve the maximum.

Nice sentiment Satish - thanks; its nice when people learn
Well I have gone back to the CR2 and reprocessed
One pass of whole pic in Topaz
    USM at 100, .3, 0 on jpeg
balanced color using black of the eye, and whitish patch on log

    lets have your feedback please

it seems sharpening this image too much in my WF was causing issues

I like this last version best. Very nice.
I think I would lighten and boost saturation (maybe 20) of the background and then run de-noise/slight blur on it.
Overall the colors/tonality are pretty even which makes the image a little "flat". But that could also be because there is no Srgb tag in the exif.

    Thanks Steven

I will have a go at that later; its very interesting how we all interpret the same picture in different ways
My new Canon 7D arrives this week - hurrah, then I have to relearn
