    New Zealand Subantarctic Islands

Yes, Zodiacs from ship to shore. Then usually some options for shorter or longer walks to explore. Definitely need to do the Col Lyall up to the Southern Royal Albatrosses on Campbell and ideally the the walk around Enderby although there is a shorter option there which gives good opportunities...

    New Zealand Subantarctic Islands

Glad to hear that, Ernst. You will love it. I have just got back from another trip and have put up some more posts recently - not yet linked in that previous master post as I will complete this batch before updating and have a lot of images to work through.

    Identification Please

    Rufous-bellied Thrush I think.

First sighting of Red-footed ****y for mainland New Zealand

A Red-footed ****y has made an appearance at the Muriwai Gannet colony and is a first for mainland New Zealand. The first ever sighting of the species for New Zealand was last year at the Kermadec Islands. http://www.tonywhitehead.com/wildlight/2017/01/****y-mission/

Great Blue Heron Flyby with Catch

Great catch, Tim. Lovely and sharp but I especially like the greys on the bird and BG and the repeating curves of the neck and neck feathers and plumes trailing from the head. Yellow of the bill and eye a nice contrast against the greys and the fish and droplets a real bonus.

    Theme Swan Close Up

Beautiful colours and textures, David. The pastel colours go so well with the delicate plumage. Only wish we could see part of the eye open. Well seen.

    Flying bullet?

Well caught, Arash. Difficult capture well executed. Wonder only if a comp decentering the bird is an option.

    Flight of the Grebe

Great catch, Stu. I have never seen one fly either. They are quite widespread even occurring in New Zealand.

    A calling African Jacana

Great pose and colours, Sanjeev. All good suggestions re nictitating membrane and addressing this would take your image to the next level. Here is a quick trackpad attempt at Marina's burning suggestion which usually works well and is simple to do. A bit more time and precision on it would do...

    Horned Lark

Good pose, colours and plumage detail, Jim. Well exposed and you have done well with the added catchlight which I feel is fine as long as declared as you did.

    Brown Creeper.

Busy birds are hard to catch at a good moment so I think this is very good despite the self critique re HA. The bird looks intent on it's purpose so the HA doesn't bother me. I agree with exploring a crop that reduces the amount of trunk on the right as I find it pulls my eye from the bird...

    Snares Penguin

These crested penguins are endemic to the Snares, a small group of uninhabited, pest-free, rocky islands south of New Zealand that are a pristine haven for seabirds. I was lucky to be on an expedition to these islands as well as the Auckland Islands and Campbell Island shortly after New Year. I...

    Calling in the dawn

I like the colour palette, fine detail in the naked twigs and the sing pose of the bird, Nikhil. I would clone out the blurry twig on the left.

Great crested grebe - weed dance

Well done to catch this action, Jonathan. Selectively reducing tonal contrast on the BG may be an option and I wonder about decentering the birds to the left of the frame if possible. Quick and nasty laptop trackpad edit to give an idea of reduced tonal contrast on BG

    Roseatte Landing

Great colours and feather detail in the wings. Good aperture choice to get adequate DOF. Perch is a bit heavy in the image and hiding feet is a disappointment in an otherwise good opportunity.

    Adelie Penguin

Thanks for the comments and suggestions everyone. Stu, it was snowing at the time so a little above 0 Celsius but well layered so not at all cold - no gloves needed!

    Theme Another preening Snipe

Nice freeing pose and eye contact, John. Plumage detail looks a bit smeared ?from noise reduction software. Not clear on the -1 EV as seems quite evenly lit - was it to save the highlights on the chest? Lovely plumage patterns and texture with the ruffled feathers.

Adelie Penguin trudging through the snow, Peterman Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Nikon D810, Nikon 200-400mm @ 400mm. 1/640s f5.6 ISO 400 Manual exposure. Comments and advice appreciated as always.
