    Western Grebe

I can't really add anything that already hasn't been said.. I prefer the 2nd with the adjustments to the reflection exposure. Great image... I wish it was one of mine...

    Gull

I like the first image better.. I personally don't find the bottom left area distracting... The dodge and burn on the second image i find more distracting as it doesn't feel balanced or natural.. Im sure with some tweaking this could be effective... Sorry i can't help with its ID.

    Noisy Miner II

Nice soft background, subject is sharp with eye visible and perch is interesting without excess branches. I think you have nailed a excellent image... well done Glennie..

    White-faced Heron

I had a bit of spare time during the week and after watching a youtube video on field blur quickly discovered I was not using it correctly as you had already picked up on... Thanks for pointing that out.. Field blur looks like something ill use much more to smooth out harsh backgrounds.. Ive...

    Great Blue Heron

I like the image a lot, but can be made a bit better with the suggested changed re: increase head room up the top and the RHS branch needs to go.. Looking forward to seeing the next edit...

    Magnificent Hummingbird

Wendy great natural looking bird portrait.. The only suggestion would be perhaps reduce the size of your watermark and alter the colour to blend/harmonise with the image..

    White-faced Heron

The bird is a bit more subdued in the last edit - more nature feel. In this edit I've removed the excess branches leaving the main branches holding the bird. Increased the gausian/field background blur to reduce the distractions in the background and help improve the feeling of separation...

    Heron

Nice shot.. I like the morning light on the birds head.. There are a three, what i think are reflections in the water just about its beak - a long line and 2 smaller dots/circles.. I would clone those out. There is also a small dot on the underside of the beak too, near the top park of its neck.

    Fuji XT1 to dSLR

Thanks Arash. I used the wrong wording and I'm well aware of the physics of lenses, apertures...etc. In a few years when the mortgage is payed off Ill be looking at one of the 500mm or 600mm f4 primes.. Until then I can easily rent one when I need them.. Im going to hire a 7d mk2 and a...

    White-faced Heron

Yes the image probably is over sharpen - new version is using bare min. sharpening (defaults). I also changed the crop to give the bird more room and included the branches (previous versions I had clone some them out). The saturation and brightness on the legs have been increased to give more...

    the little one

If you are wanting to try heres what i did. 1. use curves to brighten the entire image but focus on getting the brightness of the owl to what you like. 2. Using an adjustment brush reduce the exposure at about -1.0 (to start with) and paint the background - it will darken. 3. If its too dark...

    White-faced Heron

Hi Warren, Yes, the more I look at the image the more I think the spider web is a distraction.. Darkening the background seems to accentuate the busy background due to the increase contrast.. I think the best outcome for this image is to leave the background as per the first image and clone...

I did it in LR. Just used the adjustment brush... Ive used Capture One too and you can do the same with its adjustment brush, you can actually do more in C1 than LR due to the layers function in C1.

    Fuji XT1 to dSLR

Hi Arash, I would love a 1DX mark ii or D5 but I really can't justify the $$$. Given your experience with both crop and FF bodies do the Pro bodies AF system "drive" the lenses faster than say a crop body with "lesser" hardware? So would I get better performance with a FF with 150-600 vs a...

    White-faced Heron

Hi Glennie. Thanks for the feedback. I agree that the web doesn't really add anything but I still think the crop works as I tried bringing it all in and it "cramps" the bird too much... I think you were right there was a very slight magenta cast which required 3pts towards green (too my eye)...

Im sure with some selective NR , Sharpening and curves layers you could get an improved image and keep the noise down. A 5min edit (i.e quick dodge n burn) on the jpg gave me this... With the raw the results would be better again.

    Mallard on Ice

Very clean detailed portrait. Is this straight out of camera? Cropped? any PP? Im assuming at 500mm +TC that its straight out of camera?

    Fuji XT1 to dSLR

As i mentioned in my introduction (signed up yesterday) I currently use a Fuji XT1 with 50-140mm far from ideal. When I purchased the XT1 about 2 years ago I mainly into close up/macro, travel and landscapes. Things have changed as Ive become addicted to wildlife photograph, mainly birds...

    White-faced Heron

My first post (excluding the introduction) but please don't hold back on any advise or criticism. Aim of the image was to get a portrait of the heron with some gesture or action (e.g. feeding).. Unfortunately it wasn't in the mood for feeding. I took several images and finally got one with...
