BPN Sandhill-Crane-1920----adult-calling-_DSC0379-Indian-Lake-Estates,-FL-33855-Enhanced-NR.JPG

This image was created on 3 October 2024 down by the lake near my home at Indian Lake Estates, FL. Working from the driver’s seat of my SUV, I used the BLUBB-supported Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS lens, the Sony FE 2.0x Teleconverter, and The One, the Sony Alpha 1 Mirrorless Digital Camera). The exposure was determined via Zebra technology with ISO on the thumb dial. ISO 1600. 1/2500 sec. at f/8 (wide open) in Manual mode. When evaluated in RawDigger, the raw file exposure was determined to be perfect. AWB at 8:32:38 am on a then sunny morning.

Tracking: (upper) Zone AF-C with Bird Face/Eye detection enabled performed perfectly even at 1200mm. Be sure to click on the image to enjoy a high-res version.

If you would like to learn a ton about exposure, check out the thread here in the BPN Educational Forum.

Otherwise, all comments and questions are welcome.

Hi Artie, mmmmmm, I'm 50/50 on this one, is it calling, swallowing, or looking at something above that has caught its attention, basically what's it doing? The two tone background is in keeping with the saturation of the subject, creating a bold backdrop, but I don't like the black sooty blob creeping it at the foot, it distracts from the clean blue for me, would prefer continuity. Also are you able to get any more texture (plumage) back in the whites of the face? I know it's not blown, but it just looks a little stark.

TFS

Thanks, Steve, I was not loving the dark stuff at the bottom. So, I started from scratch for the repost. Could not do any better with the whites.

The bird was indeed calling. Their bugling is worth a trip to Florida. Let me know if this link works.

Hi Artie, I can only assume that the light with you, is quite 'clean' and so depending on the time of day, creates some bold colours and so the RP works for me now as the blue is just pure and consistent.

Surprised you needed to start from scratch, but worth doing. 👍

Thanks
Steve

Hey Arthur ... lovely portrait with the calling pose captured .
Lovely colors ... good to see them as presented .
Personally I am not bothered by the dark blob ... but we all see things differently .
Wish you had more control about the whites ....
From the composition POV ... maybe. touch more to the top , as the bird is looking up from my POV

Cool shot and TFS Andreas
