Angry hippo.jpg

Taken from a boat on the Chobe River in Botswana.
The boat pilot reversed quickly to give the Hippo space after it had surfaced quite close to us.

Hi Gavin, can you repost at 1920px wide, makes for better viewing, also can you add the exif please.

You might want to revisit the WB (white balance), although Im guessing it may be shot towards the end of the day, the hefty blue cast is less than ideal. It looks much better without, or tamed.

Thanks
Steve

Hello Gavin!

Your hippo... judging by the teeth certainly not a youngster...I like that the eye is visible and love those droplets of water. Great view of those teeth.

Agree with Steve, image probably shot late afternoon, overall has a blue cast which you can remove. I am certain you can do so much more with this. I imagine the water around the subject having this golden tinge, the hippo's palate a tad more pink, also extracting a little more detail in those teeth would be awesome. Kindly let us have the techs for this image.

You must have hundreds of frames from this trip, looking forward to see them!

And thank you for sharing Gavin, have a great evening ☺️

Kind regards,
Gabriela

I would agree with the previous coments, the image is sharp so a little differential processing would produce and excellent shot.
In my opinion the easiest way to supply exif info is at the Save for Web function in PSCC - on the RHS there is a dropdown for metadata - simply select Save All.

Hi Gavin, OK without the Exif data and knowing if this was a crop and was it originally portrait or landscape, so....

As presented the crop doesn't work for me, having a more room all round and to the RHS is better to give the subject space, just my take. Overall it's way to dark and the blue 'tint' isn't working, it muddies the overall colour and detail. There should be some lights & darks to create depth & tonal range, albeit perhaps lost in the overall PP? Detail is there, but try to avoid water and spalshes in terms of sharpening as often it appears over sharp due to the HL's.

Good DoF as you have it from the back of the mouth to the front, often folk make the mistake and the DoF is 'swallowed up' in the mouth and the front/tusks are soft.

The RP is just to illustrate my points, albeit working with a limited file does have its drawbacks, but hopefully it's clear enough. Artistic license on the colours/time of day.

Angry Hippo-2.jpg

Hi Steve,
Changed photo to size of 1920 x 1080.
Exif data ISO6400, 1/1600, F6.3, 600MM
Cropped somewhat and used Topaz denoise in final processing.
Gavin
P.S.Your edited image is amazing.
