Not too many around my patch so made the 90min drive to a site where some have dropped in this winter.

Shot this handheld with the Canon R7 and EF100-400II on a murky but windless day. It has to be calm or this species tend to stay down low in the reeds so much harder to see.

Another image with harmonious colours, it all works very well indeed. nicely exposed, clean image. I just wonder if a little more detail could have been available in the plumage - but very interesting - I lIke it.

Many thanks. I did visit another day where the lighting was very different. The detail in the plumage on almost all shots that other day was sharper with much improved definition revealing a lot more detail. So a lot was down to the big difference in lighting. I am sure a bit better PP could have helped though.

Too central for me, crop a third off the LHS and add it to the right, would then make an interesting Editorial DPS!

Thought it might have been Snettisham, or surrounding areas like the Windmill.

Thanks, and I agree the more I look at it.

It was RSPB Ouse Fen. Over 40 there at the moment and showing really well. I’ve not had much luck with these at snettisham but tbh I have been looking for other things when I have been there

Snettisham - Good time late Oct for the murmurations over the water, or Knot, both over 20k in numbers.

Edwin a friend of mine in Holland has the shot you want, each foot gripping a stalk, head looking down just about to drink.

Hey Phil ... pretty neat shot of the BT , wish I would see some one day .
I do like the pose and the overall design , nicely separated BG .
Subject does look great in terms of detail , tone and colors .
AS an option , I can see a different color grade in the BG ... to bring out the subject and perch a touch better .
