BPN-Osprey-landing-on-cabbage-palm-stump-_DSC5996-Sebastian-Inlet,-FL-Enhanced-NR.jpg

This image was created very recently on a cloudy morning with the tripod-mounted 600mm f/4 Sony lens and a firmware v2.02 a-1 body at Sebastian Inlet, FL. The Levered-clamp FlexShooter Pro make it easy to shoot flight off the tripod. This bird was sitting on the cabbage palm stump when we arrived. It kept flying off and returning to the same perch, albeit without a fish :-(

Nice shot. Shame the ball head is so expensive. Not something I could justify given how rarely I use a tripod. I prefer either handheld or laying low with a beanbag. Would love to see one as the engineering looks amazingly good.

Classic Osprey pose and you have to love those eyes! Sadly they are seldom in my neck of the woods. I'm wondering if the bird and the stump couldn't be moved a little further to the right - almost centred - as the implicit trajectory is pretty much towards the viewer. What were the following two frames like?

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Phill, I went for the Flexshooter Pro several years back. I see it as a buy good, buy once kind of investment. When laying low, my Flexshooter is on a "Skimmer pod", and I find that preferable to a bean bag. Different way of looking at things, I guess.

Thanks, Gerald, I have a few more good frames, but I like this one best. And I am happy with the position of the bird in the frame.

I agree with the ethos of buy once. In my case though it would sit in the frunk with the tripod barely used. It is not the cost in itself, it is just that I am mainly a handheld shooter. I probably use a tripod about 1% of my outings.

It pays to be patient. One of my favorite subject when visiting Florida. Love the wingspan and eye contact.
