Dabchick-3.jpg

Hi all,
This is my first post to the forum.
I am a retired, live in a town called Edenvale, and have been an enthusiast wildlife photographer since retiring a number of years ago.
The dabchick image was taken in the Marievale wetlands, south of Johannesburg, South Africa.

Hi Gavin ... welcome to the forum with a nice opener !!!
They are gorgeous little critters ...
I do like the image with the reflection , posing of the subject and the colors in general .
For me the image does appear very dark and maybe a bit tight in the frame.
Image is quite grainy ... do not want to say noisy , as at Iso 180 there should be virtually no noise visible ??

BTW it would be good if you share your thoughts about other forum members images ...as we all can learn from each other .

Welcome to BPN, glad to see you posting! Cute bird, and I love the rich colours. Sharp, but perhaps a large crop? The piece of vegetation sticking up behind the bill is unfortunate - you could perhaps at least trim the upwards part of it out. At the bottom, you were unlucky that the reflected stretched down to the frame. Hope to see more, and yes I agree with Andreas that critiquing others' works too will get you the most out of the forums :)

welcome and a nice find, I like thecae angle, some good critique above. image is a bit over sharpened or "crunchy" as some callout. the BG noise is visible, a few distractions in the BG. overall shooting at a lower angle where possible would improve this image quite a bit. TFS

Howdy Gavin,

Are you a member?

The image is very sharp. And very noisy because it is underexposed. In addition, it was presented much too dark. Best to size at 1920 pixels on the long side < 600KB :)

The crud in the water is a big negative. LMK if you have any questions on the repost. I did lots of work in ten minutes.

With love, artie
