Great spotted woodpecker Dendrocopus major

Image taken fron a hide in the meadow (on a tripod), a rather dingey looking specimen now. This one comes down regularly and today he had a skirmish with another male, I am hoping to be on the scene when the next incident occurs. (I cleaned up a little poop on the branch & cropped)

Aye the bird looks a wee bit 'roughed up'. I've noticed the same here, with my images of them. The white chest and face feathers seem to go a greyish colour. You got some great detail Jon. And, good control on the blacks/whites. The tongue adds, as does the reds on the head. They look good against the green BG.

Jon, the canvas is very pleasing in terms of your arrangement.

I like the pop of color behind. Nice timing catching the tongue out.

Is there no black on these guys? It just looks very washed out, particularly in the areas that are typically black (according to viewing images online).

Can appreciate being delicate and working to tease out detail in the darks but just feels very muted. Maybe they really are like this in nature.

Hi Jon ...
cool shot of the WP in. a lovely side profile ... the open beak and tongue are taking this up a notch .
Nice details and sharp as it should be ...
Personally I am not really " happy " with the color and the dark tones in the subject ... darks not deep enough and the WP does look quite yellowish to me . Overall I would raise the exp .... at least in the subject .

Just my take

Hi Jon,

This is a juvenile bird which accounts for the somewhat muted colours - for example under the tail and of course the red cap. That being the case, I would suggest that the colours are probably spot on for this example.

I also like the tongue showing the way it does. Obviously busy feeding.

Thanks for sharing.

Gerald
