Jay captured in our garden , there are two images of the jay I still need to get at this old gate post. when he lands/takes off and when he raises his crest.

Hello Jon,

I like this Jay a lot... and love those blues on the wings! Well exposed, nice detail, sweet pose.

BG looks good, smooth and beautiful colours, image well processed overall.

Don't mind the perch one bit and in fact I quite like it, just feel there's not enough at the top, a little tight ?

Warmest regards and many thanks for sharing,

Gabriela

Hi Gabriela, glad you liked it. I agree entirely regarding composition, as you would imagine I take landscape and portrait versions but both options are not always ideal, I am trying to get as much detail as possible. I think essentially I do not want to crop nor do I really want to add canvas.
Also continually fighting the urge to go for unnecessarily high SS. As usual I will get the safety shot but will also try to go for lower SS and as wide aperture that is practical. I won’t be obsessing with pushing as far right either I will use the”correct “ exposure and only push further if there is insufficient light on the subject. The sensor on Olympus is not light invariant- unlike Nikon so for most circumstances I will revert to Manual exposure and Auto ISO.
ISO doesn’t increase or decrease noise, it is the incorrect ratio of SS and Aperture. I don’t think too many people appreciate this.

Thank you very much Jon,
Understand your concerns about ISO but in this case I am quite sure you'd have been safe even at 1000. I am no longer obsessing either about shooting ETTR but if I can 'afford' it I will still do it every now and then. Yes to Manual Exposure with Auto ISO.
My only issue here remains the composition, just a bit more above would make such a difference 😉

Take care and have a wonderful rest of the week,

Gabriela
