Hello all, I'm back from a hiatus. Here's a shot of a Kingfisher moving to the edge of his perch for a better view. He later dove in the opposite direction and came up with a fish he could barely manage.

Canon R7 with RF 100-500, 1/640", f/7.1, ISO 2500
Edit in Darktable 4.8 and Topaz Denoise

Hi Dave, have to love those fall colors eh!?

Love Kingfishers too.

This frame has some good aspects such as the backdrop and a nice angle toward the lens. For me, the wing position is not ideal, especially the opposing wing but can't always win that battle.

Mainly, I feel like there's just too much perch below. I can see what you were trying to do with the framing but the Kingfisher gets lost in the extra tall perch and space in the lower portion.

Hope you got some more!

I deliberated on how much perch to show in the frame. The bird was at a distance and the shot was heavily cropped, so I didn't feel I could go much further without introducing artifacts. Kingfishers in my area are very shy and they perch at locations across the water that my lens won't adequately reach.

@Brian Sump, yes I do have more shots but unfortunately at the same distance. I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the wing position. I'm not challenging what you're saying, but I'd like to understand better.

@dankearl, I like this shot because it depicts some activity, where the others are the classic Kingfisher waiting-for-the moment portrait. The shots are ok, but they're similar to other photos I have if this same species on the same perch. I can post some others in the series a bit later.

I'm my own worst critic, and it seems that this image has some sort of color cast that I'm trying to nail despite the attention I applied to white balance on my calibrated monitor, and I also think I could do a better job separating the subject from the background. Plus, those fall colors seem to be a bit muted...

Thanks very much for the comments and suggestions.
