This is a female, less red on the head and I don't see any red on the belly.

Nice, good proportion of tree trunk to bird, very natural composition, exposed nicely and love that eye....nothing really to tweak, maybe blend out the brighter patch in backdrop on the upper area...maybe ?

Karl, Somewhere, some time, some one told me that the grayish looking ones are the youngsters, could that explain the lack of color on the underside? Your picture is sharp, colorful, well exposed. To my eye, it feels heavy on the right side. I'd move the woodpecker more to the left so that the tree and she balance the frame more.

Classic woodpecker pose, and I especially like the tension with the tip of the bill almost touching the tree. Nice even light on the bird with great detail and good HA. I agree that the tree seems a bit heavy, but you can't really crop without losing the foot. I might have been tempted to add a little space above to make the proportions slightly more vertical and putting the eye close to the ROT. Maybe tone down the brightness of the bg? I'd call this an adult female Red-bellied WP. The juvies have almost no red on the head.

Hi,

Very nicely exposed, and sharp. Great catchlight. I always find images of vertical woodpeckers on trees a problem re: composition/ cropping, because I agree with Grace, that this image is a little "right side heavy" but if it were moved more to the left the tree might overwhelm the picture at the expense of the bird. Overall I think it's fine as is.

Thanks for the correction, Bill. One of those silly mistakes. I posted it on NSN a few days ago of course under Red-bellied Woodpecker.
Sometimes your mind and your typing loose contact for the time being. I even answered a question about Why it was called Red-bellied :

The most obvious field mark of this bird is the red head. As there was one called Red-headed, they had to give it a different name.
In fact it has a little red on the belly but rarely shown."
