z yellow crowned night heron 2.jpg

A yellow crowned night heron doing a little fishing.

Nikon Z9, 600 f4 TC VR S; 600mm, 1/640, f 4.5, ISO 4500.

Good crisp shot, for me the image appears a little cold, I would warm it up slightly.
The reflection is a key feature, the almost white dead leaves in the background will jar - I think with some viewers - but they don't trouble me.

I'm enjoying the image with the nice crisp bird and its prey. Not a species I've ever seen or photographed.

Agree with Jon that it is a little cool, but clearly shot in a shaded area, so why not.

I would like to see more of what is in front of the bird and less of the immediate foreground with the water - but that's just me!

Thanks for sharing,

Gerald

Overall I find the image too dark, but also Paul why didn't you push the ISO for more SS and slight more DoF, the z9 can take it. How much of a crop, or is this FF? I get the impression you have applied a vignette too, I would remove it, can't see any point, but also it comes down to how you applied it which can affect the presentation/look. I do however like the crab in the beak with the vertical bit of weed.

It has potential.

Hi Paul, nice image of a Yellow-crowned Night Heron. Good crisp detail on the bird, background compliments. I might go with a 3x2 landscape crop rather than the portrait crop as was suggested previously. Thank you for sharing.

Paul,

Superb from where I sit. Crabbing not fishing :) The brightness looks perfect on my screen. I see zero need for additional d-o-f. Zero. There certainly are no "white leaves" in the background, just a few grey blades of grass that could easily be removed if you wish. The same for the single sharp blade of grass in the URC.

Where was this image made? It looks as if it could be Fort DeSoto, FL.

with love, artie
