Subject: Kestrel F (Falco tinnunculus)
Camera: Canon EOS R5
Lens: EF 500mm F/4 L IS USM II + EXTENDER EF1.4x III
Exposure: *1/2000 at f/7.1 ISO6400
Original format: Landscape, very slight crop

* SS could have dropped the SS for more streaks!!!

All Raw captures perfectly exposed, confirmed by Raw Digger

Steve

Note: The subject is fully wild and completely unconstrained. Besides the potential impact of my presence, nothing has been done to intentionally alter or affect the ongoing behaviour of the subject.

The mouse is dead and bred for snakes/reptiles and I cannot see any difference between this and using sound recordings.

Looking good Steve. The dreichness definitely adds to the image. Again very nice feather detail, even the wet ones. Good HA. The BG and raindrops, blend well and show the weather conditions. I really like the intense look on the face. Nice view of the talon. I hope I get at least half a day of rain now next week :w3

Hi Will thanks for swinging by.

Be careful for what you wish for... she certainly was sopping wet for sure, I was hoping for a shake, but sadly not. It looks like everything is still up, including the rail so you should be all set.

On reflection I think f/8 here, but that's just me, but I think also your Tawny could have benefited too??? I won't post any more, give you some space.

All the best, enjoy, have fun and keep that ISO/SS up. :bg3:

Love the pose, colours and background, Steve. Including those rain drops! Well exposed and nicely processed, great detail and sharpness.
The more time you spend with those Kestrels the better your images get:cheers:It's all about knowing your subject and behaviour and being able to anticipate what happens next.

A pleasure to view, thank you for sharing.

Warmest regards,

Good evening Gabriela, and a late one for you, I trust today has been 'out in the field' for you and you did get some images to finally share with us, some of your Avian are really cool. On reflection, I needed a slower SS to emphasise the rain to add even more impact/atmosphere, detail & sharpness yes, but could always improve, but it was an even battle with the Nikon, as we both were at 45mpx. :S3:

But it's that tweak at the beginning of the year that seems to have had the biggest influence, especially in the PP of the 'Africa' images, which... once WB is done require almost zero adjustments. I just processed a Hyena from last year, it's not a patch on the files of this year, so it's that gamble in changing that has made all the difference. However and there is often an 'however', heat haze is far more prevalent in Mirrorless, so if you still have your D850, hold onto it.

It's time to up the game next month, 'sink or swim' then let's judge. :bg3:

Have a great week, talk soon.

Thank you so much Steve,

Was out and about this afternoon albeit briefly...a number of pretty sunbirds hovering around the aloes grabbed my attention and I managed a few shots, sent you some.

Yes to slower SS here... but always a compromise? I would be careful with such lighting conditions and subject moving about...would not go lower than 1/1500s - would that make a big difference you think, in terms of the rain drops?

Just reprocessed an image from 2010, dropped you a mail:bg3:

And I hope your weekend was a fun and relaxing one, chat soon,

Warmest regards,

WOW!
This looks great, Steve. I am a sucker for rain streaks and with most modern cameras changing a couple of things is pretty quick to try for some.

Glad the mice are dead. I asked Will on one of his posts.
I have tons of dead mice and rats in the freezer, but not necessarily the best colours for placing out for our local kestrels here in Oz. I will try a supplier with darker colours one day.

Hi Akos, nice to see you back.

Yes, Will came down to this location I've been using for almost a month, the Kestrels love the mice and this has been very helpful in raising two new broods, so win win situation.

If you want some tips in shooting in the rain, let me know, I can forward something that will really help.

Cheers
Steve
